Thelma Todd Photo

A Thelma Todd publicity photo from the Hal Roach studio in the early days of sound. The idea here is that she's in an oyster shell with a bunch of pearls, which here seem to be called jewels. "Joya" is jewel in Spanish, and the name "Joya" was on Thelma Todd's Sidewalk Cafe was because of Jewel Carmen, who financed it. Likewise Roland West's yacht "Joyita" was named for her: Joyita means "little jewel".

Special thanks to Jorge Finkielman for providing us with this photo.
