"Dead Bondes" Podcast About Thelma Todd

Another one that I put on the blog a while back and forgot about. The program is still available online.

Dead Blondes Episode 2: Thelma Todd

http://www.youmustrememberthispodcast.com/episodes/2017/2/6/thelma-todd-dead-blondes-episode-2

A few observations:

The program resembles a number of other accounts, not surprisingly as the author consulted a number of other works including this blog, which is listed as one of the sources. But what has been repeated in other accounts is not always correct. Sometimes they keep a story going only because it has been told before, and not because it was correct.

Reference is made to a "Bloodthirsty District Attorney", which doesn't seem appropriate here. The District Attorney's office was notorious for calling questionable cases "suicides". Perhaps they were thinking of the Grand Jury Foreman, who did consider the case to be murder.

The "unusual clause" about Thelma Todd being thin was not really unusual as they made all the girls get skinny. It was considered an important enough problem that a series of articles was written about it in PHOTOPLAY magazine.

Thelma Todd at the Roach studio didn't predate Jean Harlow's fame as Jean Harlow became a big star in HELL'S ANGELS, and Thelma Todd actually came to work for Hal Roach after Jean Harlow had left his employ.

Says Roland West was one of the most "respected" of film makers: I would have said he was regarded as one of the most eccentric.

A "Mistress" is a kept woman: Roland West didn't support Thelma Todd financially. Although Jewel Carmen was called Roland West's "wife", Donati has said the two don't actually seem to have been married, in which case Roland West was simply involved with more than one woman rather than being married to one and having another one on the side.

Accident theory repeatedly called "eminently reasonable" while discussing Roland West: not everyone thought so well of it at the time. That theory was criticized for assuming that Thelma Todd didn't know of the dangers of carbon monoxide while it's dangers were well known and had been covered in the news.*

The impression is given that the Mafia was linked to the case because of something Roland West said: actually the gangsters had been mentioned earlier in the investigation.

The Grand Jury investigation did not reach a conclusion as stated. The case actually ended with a hung jury. The jurors were split between the suicide and murder theories, with none of them believing that it had been an accident.

Pat DeCicco said to have "no" ties to the Mafia: he at very least was associated with people with known underworld connections, such as George Raft.**

Roland West was retired and did not have his career ended by scandal as has frequently been said.

DA's office said to have tried to drag out the investigation: usually the story is that they wanted to get it over as quickly as possible. and that they had a history of doing that.

Some people call everything "forgotten", which seems kind of odd. Obviously somebody remembered it in order to make the program. "Obscure" seems more appropriate.

* I thought Donati's explanation seemed more reasonable than what they were saying at the time. Donati said that she must have fallen asleep in the car and then started the car upon awakening without opening the garage doors first.

Daily Record Dec. 16, 1935

This issue announced the death of Thelma Todd.

  1. THELMA TODD FOUND DEAD

    INVESTIGATING POSSIBLE MURDER

Los Angeles, Dec. 16 (INS) -- Missing since Saturday night, beautiful blonde Thelma Todd, famous screen actress, was found dead today behind the wheel of an automobile at her beach home near Santa Monica.

Although death, according to preliminary investigation by Detective Lieut. A. S. Roselli, appeared to have been due to natural causes, an investigation of a possible murder was begun, Roselli said.

Police ordered her body taken to the morgue for examination to determine the exact cause of death.

The first theory advanced was that death was due to monoxide gas fumes, but police said they were uncertain as to this.

Friends were reported to have found the body and summoned police.

Police said they were informed that Miss Todd had been last seen early Saturday morning, shortly after she left a party given by Ida Lupino at the Trocadero Cafe on Sunset boulevard.

According to Roland West, business partner and manager of Miss Todd's cafe, she left the party around 3 o'clock Saturday morning.

At that time, Sid Grauman, the theatre man, called West at his home on Potesano Drive, near the Seaside Cafe, and informed West Miss Todd was on her way home.

Not more than six months ago Miss Todd received extortion and death threats, which were mailed either in San Francisco or New York.

    HER CAFE THREATENED

One of the notes demanded payment of $10,000. The note ordered her to pay the $10,000 to Abe Lyman, noted orchestra leader.

Federal agents said the would-be extortionists were trying to get Lyman as an involuntary go-between. Lyman was amazed that his name was used.

Threats to "blow up" her cafe on the Roosevelt Highway were contained in one of the notes.

Two arrests were made by G-men in New York as the result of the notes and threats.

Thelma Todd was a pretty blonde Lawrence school teacher who started to fame by way of an Elks beauty contest in which she was chosen "Miss Massachusetts." That was in 1925, when she was 18 years old. With the beauty award went a scholarship to the Paramount School of Acting and a screen test.

Many other pretty girls throughout the United States had a similar chance but Miss Todd was one of the few who clicked in the studios. One of her most attractive appeals as a comedienne was that despite her beauty she was not loath to appear awkward or grotesque if it would bring a laugh.

    LAWRENCE MOURNS IDOL

The scores of friends and relatives and admirers who watched with pride as beauteous Thelma Todd strode upwards along the ladder of screen fame learned with a shock today that the little girl they knew had died suddenly.

Her aunt, Mrs. Alex Raymond, was nearly prostrated when she received the news. The school department, where Thelma was once listed as a prospective school teacher, was thrown into sadness.
