Joan Lyndell And Joan Blondell
Every Doc Savage story had a beautiful girl in it, and Joan Lyndell was one of the girls.
Joan Lyndell appeared in one Doc Savage adventure, THE MYSTIC MULLAH, which was originally published in DOC SAVAGE magazine in January 1935.
But while Joan Blondell usually seemed to be seeking wealth in her movies, Joan Lyndell is described as a woman who had already attained wealth, and in that way is different. Since she is described as being tall and having dark hair, she wasn't even supposed to be that similar in appearance. Only the name seems the same, but that is close enough to make it look as if they had done it on purpose.
Joan Lyndell as depicted with Doc Savage in an illustration from he original magazine.

Doc Savage stories usually had a weird mystery menace as well as a beautiful girl, and this one had such a menace, ghostly green spirit snakes that seemed to defy explanation until Doc got around to explaining them.
The green snakes in this story were borrowed for the 1975 movie DOC SAVAGE: THE MAN OF BRONZE, which featured Ron Ely as Doc Savage.

Before that move had been made there had been plans to make a Doc Savage movie with Chuck Connors, but they were unable to get the rights to the character and they ended up making a western called RIDE BEYOND VENGEANCE. Also in the cast was Joan Blondell. Because of that, Joan Blondell herself could be seen as being linked to Doc Savage.

Some photos of Joan Blondell, some with her sister Gloria, who was also in the movies. In 1940 Gloria Blondell married Cubby Broccoli, a cousin of Pat DiCicco. Pat DiCicco had been married to Thelma Todd.

"Love And The Leading Ladies" - SILVER SCREEN, April 1936
A tale of woe.
Morgan Galloway was an actor with whom Dorothy Appleby had costarred in YOUNG SINNERS on Broadway, hence the character assassination pertaining to acting.
This article was written by Ed Sullivan, an old-time reporter who later hosted a prime time variety show on television. There is a reference to ROBERTA early on. Lyda Roberti starred in the original Broadway production of the JEROME KERN and OTTO HARBACH musical comedy ROBERTA at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City.
As for the individuals mentioned in this account, we have mentioned some of them before. I believe that Johnny Weissmuller was told to divorce his first wife by MGM because they thought marriage might affect his popularity, after which he married Lupe Velez while still in their employ. Esther Muir would work with the Marx Brothers in the 1937 movie A DAY AT THE RACES: she is thought of as being a replacement for Thelma Todd with the team. Pictures from a British fan magazine from the thirties.
You see the last name of "Alison Lloyd" spelled with one letter "L" or two, despite the story that the name was selected because of it's numerological significance.

FILM WEEKLY June 30, 1933
In 1933 Thelma Todd went to England and made the movie YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU. This British movie magazine came out afterward with Joan Blondell on the cover and an article about Thelma Todd inside.
Joan Blondell around the time she made 42ND STREET and GOLDDIGGERS OF 1933.
Thelma Todd's height was usually given as five foot four and her weight was usually given as a hundred and twenty pounds. The same height and weight was given for Clara Bow in this period, but Clara Bow had a difficult time keeping her weight that low as a grown woman. It's not hard to believe that Thelma Todd's weight had originally been more.
Jean Harlow was very popular at the time.

Photos For A Fan
A fan's photo collection from the thirties included Thelma Todd, along with a lot of others, all of which they carefully listed on an index. Which I have here on the blog along with a number of the other pictures.
The seller's description on ebay:
Here is the photo of Thelma Todd with her dog "Gallant", which was evidently widely circulated at the time.
Quite a few popular favorites in there. Some fans of the day were able to amass such collections even in the depths of the depression. At that time there were people going to the movies even when they had little money to spend on anything else. The popularity of the movies has since declined, as has the quality of the movies themselves.

Wallace Ford And His Wife Martha Ford
Wallace Ford and his wife were friends of Thelma Todd's.
Wallace Ford (12 February, 1898 – 11 June, 1966) was an English film and television actor who, with his friendly appearance and stocky build later in life, appeared in a number of film westerns and B-films.
Born Samuel Jones Grundy in Bolton, Lancashire, England, he spent childhood in a Dr. Barnardo's home. At an early age he was adopted by a farmer from Manitoba, Canada where he was ill treated. About the age of eleven, he ran away and did oddjobs later becoming an usher in a theatre.
Following his discharge from the army after World War I, he became a vaudeville actor in astock company before performing on Broadway.[1]
He started on a filmcareer when Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer gave him part in the film Possessed and went on to appear in over 200 films including 13 directed by John Ford. (The two were unrelated.)
He also appeared in a 1964 episode of The Andy Griffith Show as Roger Hanover, Aunt Bee's old flame, which originally aired October 19th. Twenty months later, Ford died. He is buried with an unmarked grave in Culver City's Holy Cross Cemetery.
* * *
Today, Wallace Ford might be remembered as much for his appearences in the "Mummy" movies as for anything else he did, although he had a long and successful career in the movies and later worked on television. His wife Martha is mentioned in connection with Thelma Todd in various accounts because of her testimony that she had talked to Thelma Todd on the phone the afternoon before she was found dead: the authorities insisted that Thelma Todd must already have been dead at that time and that Mrs. Ford must have been mistaken. A sad aftermath for a festive occasion at any event.
Thelma Todd and Wallace Ford can be seen in one of the photos on this page in the January 1935 issue of PHOTOPLAY.
