Cameos In The Comics

Various movie stars turned up as characters in the comics.

Mary Astor* on the cover of MOLLY O'DAY ( 1945 ): inside, the character resembles SALLY THE SLEUTH.

A Joe Penner page from 1938 was reprinted in MOLLY O'DAY.

The duck is there because he had an act where he kept asking everyone if they wanted to buy a duck.

The character of Dixie Dugan was based on Louise Brooks.

MY FRIEND IRMA was based on a character that Marie Wilson played, and we see a picture of Marie Wilson herself on the cover along with the cartoon character.

Moronica was like another version of Marie Wilson.

STARLET O'HARA had red hair and might have been meant to be like Rita Hayworth. Her friend Fritzi made a reference to having hair like Hedy Lamarr. There were some movie stars in their stories.

HEART TO HEART was a silent movie that was produced by First National and starred Mary Astor as a princess who comes to live in the United States. Thelma Todd was also in the cast, along with Lloyd Hughes and Louise Fazenda.

Thelma Todd is not mentioned by name, but that looks like her in the middle of the line of people who are bowing to the princess. And also in a similar lineup in a picture on the right of the previous page of the flyer.

Alison Loyd Autograph

Thelma Todd used the name "Alison Loyd" in the movie CORSAIR, and sometimes we see where she signed her name as "Alison Loyd" as well as Thelma Todd. This is one example that turned up recently.

Fan Photo From First National

In the silent era, Thelma Todd worked for a time at First National, which later became Warner Brothers. Here is a photo the studio sent out to a fan, together with the original envelope. Both the photo and the envelope are signed "Thelma Todd".

It was common for the studios to have other people sign the names of movie stars on photos for the fans, so I think it is likely that these signatures were not actually signed by Thelma Todd herself.
