Sdewalk Cafe Photos

Posted by Kevin Frick in the Thelma Todd Fans group on facebook.

Castillo del Mar has not been significantly altered since being built 90 years ago, which is a boon given that its original features include solid oak peg-and-groove floors, leaded/stained glass windows, elaborately carved wood doors, art deco tiles, bow-and-truss ceilings, hand-burnished redwood beams and corbels, and thick lathe and plaster walls.
The 15,000-square-foot building that once housed Todd’s eponymous cafe, a nightclub, and Todd’s apartment.
On December 16, 1935, Todd’s housekeeper discovered the 29-year-old actress, clad in a fur coat and evening gown, dead in the property's garage—a victim of carbon monoxide poisoning. Officially ruled as accidental, Todd's death continues to be the source of much speculation to this day.

The way it was when Thelma Todd was there.

The Roadside Café, Thelma's apartment and Roland West's home and garage where Thelma died are about 700 feet apart and separate by stairs and streets. Both places are up for sale or have been sold and most of the stairs connecting the two buildings are gone or in disrepair. Both places are amazing

More of Thelma's former bathroom attached to her apartment... it's gone... she's still there!

Jewel Carmen's House

Some pictures of the house uphill of the Sidewalk Café where Jewel Carmen lived. Jewel Carmen was the estranged wife of Roland West, who was Thelma Todd's partner in the venture. Jewel Carmen was also involved in the Sidewalk Café and was said to be the one that financed the business.

THE BATTLE OF THE CENTURY

This 1927 Laurel and Laurel and Hardy comedy has recently been restored and can now be seen on youtube.

First to be hit by a pie is Dorothy Coburn, who appeared in several Laurel and Hardy films in this period.

Anita Garvin appears in this film as a girl who finds a lost pie, but somehow does not seem to appreciate the discovery.

Thelma Todd does not appear in this film, although Charlie Hall ( who was there at the time ) said that she was. It would appear that in his memory he substituted her for Dorothy Coburn and Anita Garvin.

That's Dorothy Coburn on the poster, by the way.

IT'S ALL GREEK TO ME Cover

VAMPING VENUS was a 1928 First National production starring Thelma Todd and Charlie Murray.
IT'S ALL GREEK TO ME was a title used by the studio in publicity prior to the film's release. In this film, Thelma Todd played an actress and this scene is set in her dressing room, with photos of her visible on the wall behind them.
