Bush Stadium Becomes Apartment House

Bush Stadium in Indianapolis, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been transformed into an apartment complex. Which sounds kind of funny in more ways than one. You would have thought they'd take someplace on the Register more seriously than that.

Aerial shot of Bush Stadium from the south.

Aerial view of the apartment complex.

Some of us remember working on a movie in that stadium.

Some scenes of the movie EIGHT MEN OUT were filmed there in 1988, because of it's resemblance to Chicago's Comiskey Park, as well as Crosley Field in Cincinnati.

Producer John Sayles played Ring Lardner and Studs Terkel played Hugh Fullerton.

And here I am being arrested by two Keystone Kops at the stadium in a gag picture taken during the filming.

I was one of the extras, but I couldn't see myself anywhere in the finished film.

A picture of an actual ball game that they had at the stadium.

                                                                 Some stadium details.

Those seat cushions were plastic. In the movie they covered them with some brown stuff to make them look like the old seats they would have had in that period.

They had people doing "volunteer work" fixing up the stadium. Not me. I got paid for my work.

And then I said I didn't care much if the movie made any money or not, at least I made something out of it.

The stadium showing some signs of neglect later on.

More recently it was used as an auto graveyard.

It seems like a shame they can't just keep it as a stadium.

FILM WEEKLY June 30, 1933

In 1933 Thelma Todd went to England and made the movie YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU. This British movie magazine came out afterward with Joan Blondell on the cover and an article about Thelma Todd inside.

Joan Blondell around the time she made 42ND STREET and GOLDDIGGERS OF 1933.

The article is illustrated with a publicity photo from YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU.

Thelma Todd's height was usually given as five foot four and her weight was usually given as a hundred and twenty pounds. The same height and weight was given for Clara Bow in this period, but Clara Bow had a difficult time keeping her weight that low as a grown woman. It's not hard to believe that Thelma Todd's weight had originally been more.

Jean Harlow was very popular at the time.

Memorial Day

On Memorial Day we honor our dead from past wars.

A Memorial Day poster from the era of the first World War.

Memorial Day Postcards

“May thy sweet blossom never cease to bloom in love and trust and peace.”

“Strew the fair garlands where slumber the dead.”

“Nor shall their story be forgot”

“Wherever it floats, on land or sea, no stain its honor mars.”

The Civil War ironclad "Merrimac", which fought the "Monitor", was named after the Merrimac river in Massachusetts that Thelma Todd knew.

GLAMOUR HELPS THE WAR EFFORT

History tells us Marlene Dietrich was the glamour girl who spent the most time entertaining the toops during the second World War. Originally from Germany, she entered that country along with the US army in the last part of the war.

Ann Sheridan went to China with a USO group in 1944. A B-25 was specially decorated for the occasion and Ann Sheridan posed with the aircraft.

"What does Amelia Arehart got that I ain't got?"

Paulette Goddard also traveled to the China-Burma-India theater of the war to entertain the toops.

Like Ann Sheridan, she left sooner than originally planned, leading to some complaints. But at least they made some effort to contribute to the war effort. Paulette Goddard's husband Charlie Chaplin made none.

And here's Martha Raye in Vietnam in 1969.

A different war, but the same old Martha Raye.

Carole Landis Article - "Determined Lady"

Another period fan magazine article about Carole Landis.

Rosina Lawrence had also worked for both Hal Roach and Twentieth Century Fox. It didn't seem to work very well for her, either. Maybe somebody just didn't know who or what was good.

Carole Landis Article - "She Won't Depend On The Landis Line"

An article from a fan magazine about Carole Landis.

Reblogged from http://carolelandisofficial.blogspot.com/2012/10/articles-about-carole.html

Note the weight given for Carole Landis of 118 pounds. This was about what was given for Thelma Todd, Clara Bow, and many other glamour girls, including Marilyn Monroe. The measurements of 36.5 - 25 - 36 are very close to the standard 36 - 24 - 36 given for many others.

You come across many references to the occult in Hollywood history.

They always said the comedy actresses wanted to act in serious dramas. But there's something to be said for comedy, too.
