PALOOKA

P

PALOOKA was a comedy based on the comic strip JOE PALOOKA, which was released on January 26, 1934.

.

PALOOKA starred Stuart Erwin, Jimmy Durante, and Lupe Velez

Lupe Velez and Jimmy Durante appeared together on Broadway as well as in several other films.

Thelma Todd appears as "Trixie", but that name may have only been used in the credits.

Another shot in the same costume.

Another shot with a cigarette. Smoking is supposed to indicate that she is a bad girl.

Robert Armstrong as Palooka senior. The booze also indicates that Thelma Todd's character is supposed to be a bad girl. But this is a comedy, so it is not supposed to be taken seriously.

This is supposed to be funny, too. .

"Joe Palooka" is played by Stuart Erwin, and Mary Carlisle played his girlfriend. Neither appears in any scenes with Thelma Todd in this film, her character being involved with Joe Palooka's father in the story

SPEAK EASILY Photos

Thelma Todd, Jimmy Durante, Buster Keaton, and Hedda Hopper in a publicity photo for SPEAK EASILY ( 1932 ). This photo differs from the scene in the actual movie, which was frequently the case, as these stills were shot separately.

SPEAK EASILY

Thelma Todd, Jimmy Durante, Buster Keaton, and Hedda Hopper in a publicity photo for SPEAK EASILY. There is no such scene in the actual movie.

Publicity claimed that Hedda Hopper in this movie dressed like Elsie Janis. I wouldn't know.

PALOOKA ( Complete Movie )

Here is the movie PALOOKA. Thelma Todd is in it, but has only a small part as the "other woman" that Joe Palooka's father ( Robert Armstrong) gets involved with, setting the stage for a triangle involving Stewart Erwin, Mary Carlisle, and Lupe Velez.

Thelma Todd Article

This article about Thelma Todd is in Portuguese and was originally published in a Brazilian movie magazine.

THELMA TODD - (CINEARTE, February 15, 1934, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

The large photo I believe was shot outside on the Hal Roach studio lot. The other pictures show Thelma Todd with Zasu Pitts from one of their short subjects, Thelma Todd with Richard Dix from THE GAY DEFENDER, and the last shows her with Buster Keaton and Jimmy Durante with SPEAK EASILY.

Special thanks to Jorge Finkielman for providing this magazine article.

SPEAK EASILY Herald

I had a herald for SPEAK EASILY here before, but this is a bigger copy.

Although Buster Keaton's career was in a decline at the time this film was made, it was a financial success for the studio, and Thelma Todd got a lot of publicity out of it.

"The Blonde Bomber" - SPEED COMICS, 1946

"The Blonde Bomber" refers to Carole Landis, just as "The Oomph Girl" refers to Ann Sheridan. "Umbriago", another character in this story, takes his name from a song that was sung by Jimmy Durante.

YOU NASTY MAN Sheet Music

Alice Faye sang YOU NASTY MAN in her first movie, GEORGE WHITE SCANDALS, and her picture is on the sheet music. Pictures of costars Jimmy Durante and Rudy Vallee are on it as well.

"Don't ever do that!" as well as "You nasty man!" were catchphrases of  comedian Joe Penner.

Alice Faye went on to great success and still has a following today. But Penner's popularity didn't last.

SPEAK EASILY Photos

Thelma Todd got a lot of publicity out of appearing in the 1932 movie SPEAK EASILY, with Buster Keaton. And while Keaton's talkies are not well regarded today, this movie would originally have been considered a success. The end of Keaton's series at MGM after only one more movie was due to problems behind the scenes, rather than a failure at the box office.
