Dorothy Appleby In The Fan Magazines

Some Dorothy Appleby items from the fan magazines.

Here is one that says Dorothy Appleby is going to Pathe's acting school. This is similar to Paramount's selection of Thelma Todd and others for their acting school.

motionpicturenews Feb 2, 1929

But Dorothy Appleby had already made movies prior to this. There is also a story that Thelma Todd had been in a couple of movies before she was at Paramount.

This one is about Dorothy Appleby being cast in a movie that she doesn't seem to have ever made.

Paul Bern was also involved in this project, but left Pathe shortly afterwards. He later went to MGM, where he married Jean Harlow.

Hedda Hopper Book _ FROM UNDER MY HAT

Hedda Hopper was a former actress who later became a gossip columnist.

The title of this book refers both to a well known expression and the author's association with hats. Hedda Hopper was a gossip columnist who was supposedly always telling secrets. As a matter of fact, the name of her column was "Under My Hat". She also wore a lot of fancy hats.

Thelma Todd as well as William Desmond Taylor is mentioned where she discusses the death of Paul Bern.

Her son William Hopper played the character of Paul Drake on PERRY MASON, and can therefore be considered to be associated with the White Brothers as Sam White was involved in the production of that series.

Does Tragedy Haunt Hollywood?

From THE LOS ANGELES TIMES MAGAZINE, January 19, 1936

Does tragedy haunt Hollywood? The extent to which tragedies occurred in Hollywood might not have been any greater than elsewhere, but they happened nonetheless.

There were recurring allegations that the authorities did not investigate things thoroughly enough, even that things were deliberately covered up. It was said that the local politicians and the studio bosses worked together to ensure that things would continue smoothly in spite of any problem that might happen to arise.

Some people even thought that there were some sort of connections between these tragedies. They thought the victims had somehow fallen victim to some sort of cycles of bad luck.  Dorothy Dell was quoted as having said the day before her death, "You know, they say deaths go in cycles of three. First it was Lilyan Tashman, then Lew Cody. I wonder who'll be next?"

I don't believe it was bad luck, myself. More likely a combination of different things were seen as bad luck by people who had no way of knowing everything that was involved.

Hollywood's Unsolved Mysteries ( Picturegoer )

Picturegoer July 3, 1937
Hollywood's unsolved mysteries. This isn't a very good copy, but I'll go ahead and post it, maybe a better copy will turn up eventually.

Much of this is standard stuff, about the same as you see in other accounts, although I'm not familiar with, Ross Alexander who they say was shot four months after marrying Anna Nagel. They might have made a bigger deal of that in England ( this is an English publication ) than they did here, Anna Nagel was English.
