Darla Hood's Dollhouse

Posted by Matthew Lydick in The Hal Roach Studio group on facebook:

With December beginning and the holidays approaching, I figured it would be a good time for a story. As Darla Hood told Richard Bann and Leonard Maltin, "At Christmas time, Mr. Roach would ask each kid individually what he wanted as a gift. It was an annual Our Gang tradition, and you could have anything you wanted. Mr. Roach would find it or build it. One year I asked for a dollhouse. So the prop department constructed a ten-by-twelve-foot playhouse that they moved into my back yard with a moving truck. It was completely decorated and furnished with my-sized furniture that I could arrange and rearrange. We made it into a neighborhood clubhouse and used to sleep out overnight. It was fantastic." Spanky And Alfalfa With Zeffie Tilbury

SECOND CHILDHOOD was an Our Gang comedy in which Spanky and his friends befriend a lonely old lady played by Zeffie Tilbury and bring happiness into her life.  Here is a publicity photo from this film with the original caption.

In the same year Zeffie Tilbury also portrayed the Gypsy Queen in THE BOEMIAN GIRL: Thelma Todd played the Gypsy Queen's daughter.

Jean Darling Leaves Our Gang To Freelance

Jean Darling left Hal Roach and Our Gang for other roles, in which she was to find success.

A

Jean Darling Lookalike

The little girl on the left was Toronto's choice to play Jean Darling. This was part of a campaign to get kids in different city to impersonate the Our Gang kids. The idea was that the impersonators would themselves attempt to make their own comedy film.

Spanky McFarland

Spanky McFarland was one of the Our Gang kids. And he worked with Thelma Todd, too.

He was in the last film of the series with Zasu Pitts, ONE TRACK MINDS.

And here he is with Patsy Kelly, who replaced Zasu Pitts in the series. At left is director Gus Meins. I believe the costume Thelma Todd is wearing is from MAID IN HOLLYWOOD.

According to the caption the other boy is Spanky's brother, Tommy.
