Darla Hood's Dollhouse

Posted by Matthew Lydick in The Hal Roach Studio group on facebook:

With December beginning and the holidays approaching, I figured it would be a good time for a story. As Darla Hood told Richard Bann and Leonard Maltin, "At Christmas time, Mr. Roach would ask each kid individually what he wanted as a gift. It was an annual Our Gang tradition, and you could have anything you wanted. Mr. Roach would find it or build it. One year I asked for a dollhouse. So the prop department constructed a ten-by-twelve-foot playhouse that they moved into my back yard with a moving truck. It was completely decorated and furnished with my-sized furniture that I could arrange and rearrange. We made it into a neighborhood clubhouse and used to sleep out overnight. It was fantastic." This charming young actress from the Universal lot is all smiles these days—and no wonder—she made a hit in ‘As Good as Married’ and she’s being groomed for the feminine lead in a new picture called ‘Carnival Queen.’ ”

1947 caption: “ ‘TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS... The only creature stirring is Leslie Brooks, who can’t seem to resist a preview look at the packages while no one else is looking. A Columbia star, Leslie shares stellar honors with Jimmy Lloyd in ‘Cigarette Girl.’ ”

Vernon Dent Plays Santa Claus On I LOVE LUCY

Vernon Dent appeared as Santa Claus with Lucille Ball on television in the 1950's.

From the Three Stooges fans on facebook.

This lost piece of I Love Lucy originally aired at the end of the episode titled: DRAFTED, from 1951. It was the inspiration for the ending of another Lucy Christmas episode 5 years later.

CBS ran this as an episode tag in 1951, 1952 and 1953. When I LOVE LUCY did its only full Christmas-theme episode in 1956, this bit was redone, with a different actor replacing the retired Vernon Dent.

Mary Xmas

Here is a good copy of this Christmas picture of Thelma Todd.

Thelma Todd appears to be dressed as a little girl with a doll, ready for school with books, an apple for the teacher, and a tin lunchbox similar to this one.

Bob Hope Christmas With The Troops

Bob Hope entertained the troops for many years, starting in the second World War and continuing on through a number of other wars. My little brother saw him when he was in the army.

Here we have a segment about Bob Hope's entertaining the troops that is related to Christmas.
