Columbia's Krazy Kat was promoted above Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse, which was also being distributed by Columbia at this time.

 

At this point Krazy Kat was made to resemble Felix the Cat, a character that went into a decline after the coming of sound.  

 

 

SCREEN SNAPSHOTS was popular at the time.

The Three Stooges had the longest-running comedy film series in history.

Elsie Ames, shown with Buster Keaton at the bottom, costarred with Buster Keaton and Harry Langdon and is given equal billing with them in this ad.

Sometimes Christine McIntyre played about the same character as "Pearl Pureheart" in Mighty Mouse cartoons. Here we see her as the long-suffering heroine of a Three Stooges comedy.

June Brewster

June Brewster was teamed with Carol Tevis in the "Blondes and Redheads" series at RKO, which was produced by George Stevens and has been likened to his "Boy Friends" series at Roach, but the focus was on the girls, and the characters were not teenagers. June Brewster appeared in minor roles in features as a pretty girl, and can frequently be seen in leg art publicity photos. She appeared in HIPS, HIPS, HOORAY with Wheeler and Woolsey and  in MEET THE BARON ( 1933 ) with The Three Stooges and Ted Healy, with whom they were working at that time.

She bred pedigree show dogs in addition to acting (source: "The Film Daily, Apr-Jun 1935").

 ( Guy ) McAfee was a former L.A. vice squad captain, turned proprietor of an illicit gambling den, the Clover Club on Sunset Strip, which was equipped with gaming tables that could be flipped over and hidden during raids. This did not, ultimately, stop a successful raid by the police. McAfee, with wife June in tow, duly left for Las Vegas, where he acquired the Pair-O-Dice Nightclub and Casino on Highway 91. He purchased several other lucrative properties during the 1940's: the Frontier Club, the Mandalay Lounge, the Pioneer Club, the SS Rex (which became Benny Binion's Horseshoe), and, most famously the Golden Nugget in 1946. At the time of his death fourteen years later, McAfee was considered one of the most successful operators in the history of America's gambling capital.

Recently, I came across a news item for an early appearance of Dorothy Appleby on television.




PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE July 18. 1931 - Dorothy Appleby, MGM's ingenue,  looking over a bunch of television fan mail from station WGBS-W2XCR New York ... She was the first stage or screen star to televise over that station.

W2XCR was founded in 1931 in Long Island City, NY by the radio station WGBS (now WINS-AM). During the period early part of 1931, but before the call letters were changed to WINS, the station began experimenting with mechanical television broadcasting, operating a Jenkins mechanical scanner through the experimental transmitter, W2XCR. The station broadcast using both 48-line, 15 frame/s, and 60-line, 20 frame/s standards during 1931.
Mechanical TV broadcast in the AM radio band (550–1600 kHz) in 1928 and 1929. With 24 and 30 line systems, only about 10 kHz of bandwidth was needed, so standard radio channels could be used. Some stations also broadcast in the shortwave band. Beginning in 1930, the 2-3 mHz band was used for television, with 100 kHz channel width. 60 line systems required about 40 kHz of bandwidth. TV broadcasts could be identified by their distinctive sound.

The 1940 Three Stooges comedy A PLUMBING WE WILL GO had a gag that involved television.





People watching this film today are sometimes surprised that they had television that far back. But Dorothy Appleby had been on television years before. And Hugo Gernsback, the original publisher of RADIO NEWS, was one of the people who had been experimenting with television as far back as the late 1920's.
