Dorothy Appleby Poster

This is the JAIL BIRDS OF PARADISE poster I had here before, but it's in a larger size. Incidentally, the art is by Al Hirschfield.

Dorothy Appleby Poster

JAIL BIRDS OF PARADISE was a Technicolor MGM short from 1934, which had Dorothy Appleby with two of the Three Stooges, Moe and Curly Howard. We've had a different copy of this poster here before.

MON CINE With Page On KING KONG

MON CINE for October 26, 1933 had a blurb about KING KONG on the cover above a photo of Thelma Todd,

and here is a page about KING KONG from inside this magazine.

Another page on KING KONG from an unidentified Belgian magazine from the same period.

The movie KING KONG was a smash hit. No remake will ever take it's place, despite the claims of various hucksters looking to make a fast back.

He Flubbed Kissing Thelma Todd

It sounds like a joke, but I'm not making it up. Of course, somebody else might have. Maybe it was all for publicity to begin with. At any rate it's one of a series, since we just had another photo with Thelma Todd practicing love scenes with Robert Andrews at Paramount's acting school.

Joyce Compton Letter 80's

A letter Joyce Compton sent to a fan in the 1980's along with a photo.

Vintage Original glossy, photo without borders of JOYCE COMPTON from the early 1930’s.
Joyce Compton was an American actress who acted in more than 200 films during her 35 year career.  She was born Olivia Joyce Compton in Lexington, Kentucky and not "Eleanor Hunt" as is frequently erroneously stated.  She had appeared in the 1931 film “Good Sport” with Eleanor Hunt and this confusion in an early press article followed Compton throughout her career.
JOYCE COMPTON first made a name for herself when she was named one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars in 1926, alongside: Mary Brian, Dolores Costello, Joan Crawford, Dolores del Río, Janet Gaynor and Fay Wray.
She is most likely wearing her own gown and accessories, as she often had to use her own gowns, furs and jewels in many of the low budget movies she appeared in.  The opal ring that had belonged originally to her maternal aunt is shown on her pinkie finger in this photo and an excellent close-up of the ring.  JOYCE COMPTON reported her aunt died young at 40 years old and JOYCE was around 13 years old at the time.  She inherited this ring and wore it all through high school and wore it in almost all of her films.  This photo is one of the best in terms of seeing the opal ring on her pinkie.
A devout Christian, on her gravestone, just beneath her dates of birth and death, is written "Christian Actress". One can see her faith addressed in the letter included, as she signed off with “God Bless”
Also selling is a 4 7/8” X 3 1/8” Vintage Original double-sided AUTOGRAPHED LETTER signed by JOYCE COMPTON with her own hand in black ink. It reads:
“Dear Peter--

Thank you for your interest thru these many years & your kind letter. I enjoyed very much.

Was pleased to see this photo copy of Chas Farrell & myself when we were young.  A whole series of romantic photos were taken of us when we were under contract to Fox Studios with the idea of teaming us together – when Janet Gaynor had had some trouble with the studio.  I never did get any of the prints.

Do you suppose you could send me a copy like this? Look who is asking for a pic-- Ha.

Thanks again—

God Bless.

Joyce”
JOYCE COMPTON sent this Autograph Letter to PETER HANSON, a well-known collector of movie star memorabilia.  I purchased this letter and photo from his estate.  I would estimate JOYCE COMPTON wrote this letter in the early 1980's, as she was known to use yellow stationary during that time frame.

Dear Peter- I surely do remember you & the kind photos sent.  Thank you for your Holiday thoughts.  So sorry to hear of surgery- but so great you have recovered.  My prayers- I Thank the Lord!  Good the old films still holding up.  'Awful Truth' was a bundle of laughs as I remember.

Wishing you a great New Year of Perfect health

Joyce Compton Letter And Photo 4 8 81

Joyce Compton sent this letter to a fan, along with a photo of her from the Hal Roach production TURNABOUT.

Vintage Original glossy photo without borders of JOYCE COMPTON from the 1940 film, “TURNABOUT.”
On the back of the photo is an affixed typed snipe.  It reads “Joyce Compton, featured in the hilarious Hal Roach production, “Turnabout,” with her two prize Brussels Griffins.  Roach produced and directed the sparkling Thorne Smith novel with a stellar cast featuring Adolphe Menjou, Carole Landis, John Hubbard, William Gargan, Verree Teasdale and Mary Astor.  A United Artists release.”

Also selling is a 8 1/2” X 11” Vintage Original two-sided AUTOGRAPH Letter signed by JOYCE COMPTON with her own hand in black ink.  In this lengthy letter she speaks of some photos Peter Hanson had sent her, and of some of her personal memories, likes, and private moments in life.  She speaks of breeding pure-bred dogs and cats as well as doing oil painting and the specifics of  some of her paintings.  She speaks of being a red head, as well as being blonde during her career, but that she is now "a little old lady".   A portion of the original envelope she addressed is enclosed with a postmark date of April 8, 1981, which dates the timeframe of this letter to PETER HANSON to 1981.   Peter Hanson was a well-known movie star memorabilia collector and was known to be friends with many of the Hollywood stars.  I purchased this photo, along with this letter and envelope clipping from the PETER HANSON estate.   This is a must have fro the JOYCE COMPTON collector, as the letter very much personalizes the life of JOYCE COMPTON and most detailed.

Also included is an 4 1/4” X 4 1/4” envelope clipping from the envelope the letter was sent in. It has a April 8, 1981 postmark.

Joyce Compton (1907-1997) broke into films in the late silent era (1924) and made no fewer than 125 movies before retiring by the age of 50. She often played comic supporting roles. Among her best films were The Awful Truth (1937) and Sky Murder (1940). Between films, Compton designed her own clothes and engaged in her hobby of oil painting.
