JAIL BIRDS OF PARADISE was a Technicolor MGM short from 1934, which had Dorothy Appleby with two of the Three Stooges, Moe and Curly Howard. We've had a different copy of this poster here before.

Here is an interesting photo of our Joe Besser with Moe Howard and Larry Fine from The Three Stooges. It was taken on the last day of shooting their last short. The short was called Flying Saucer Daffy, and that was on December 20th 1957. The photo seen below was taken in the afternoon some hours before director/producer Jules White told the boys that they were not extending their contract. The contract would expire on Jan 3rd 1958. In photo we see famed actor Rory Calhoun and actor Frank Dekova with the stooges. They were shooting the film Apache Territory that same day at the Columbia Studios lot. The blonde actress in the photo was also in Flying Saucer Daffy but her name is unknown. It was a happy time for all the Stooges. Sadly a different photo taken the same day but about 5 hours later they all appear sad. It was the end of an era. For Joe it was just another chapter in his long comedic career.

Today Frank Dekova is probably best known for playing the Indian chief on the television program F TROOP.

Hello Pop! is the third of five short subjects starring Ted Healy and His Stooges released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. A musical-comedy film, the short also featured the Albertina Rasch Dancers and Bonnie Bonnell. The film was considered lost until a 35mm nitrate print was discovered in Australia in January 2013.^[1]

Plot

Ted Healy is a producer trying to stage an elaborate musical revue. His efforts are constantly interrupted by demanding back stage personalities: a flaky musician (Henry Armetta), a less-than-cooperative girl friend (Bonnie Bonnell), and a trio of raucous friends (The Three Stooges). Ted is able to get the show ready for presentation, but during the main number the Three Stooges slip beneath the enormous hoopskirt costume worn by the leading vocalist. They emerge on stage during the performance, ruining the show.^[2]

Production

Originally planned under the title Back Stage, Hello Pop! was the third of five short films made by MGM featuring the vaudeville act billed as “Ted Healy and His Stooges.” The act focused primarily on Healy’s wit and caustic commentary, with the Stooges receiving the brunt of the physical slapstick. For the MGM short films, actress Bonnie Bonnell was incorporated into the configuration as Healy’s love interest.^[3]
Hello Pop! was the second of two MGM Stooge shorts filmed utilized the two-color Technicolor process. (Nertsery Rhymes, the act’s first film for MGM, was also shot in color.) The use of color was predicated by the decision to recycle two musical numbers from earlier Technicolor-lensed MGM films into the Hello Pop! musical sequences, the Irving Berlin song "I'm Sailing on a Sunbeam", from the 1929 film It’s a Great Life, and the "Moon Ballet" sequence from the unreleased MGM feature The March of Time.^[4]

Lost film

In the 1930s, studios were offered their two-color negatives by Technicolor, who was at that time storing them. Most studios declined the offer, the camera negatives were junked, and original release prints usually disposed of shortly after a theatrical run. A print existed in MGM's Vault #7, but was destroyed by fire in 1967.^[1]
In January 2013, it was announced that Hello Pop! had been located in an Australian private film collection and was in the process of being restored for public viewing.^[1] It will reportedly be screened at the Film Forum in New York City, on 30 September 2013.^[5]

A Gagster Named Gaggy

Once upon a time in Batman comics, the Joker had a Stooge.

This guy was called "Gaggy", and he was more or less the Joker's Jester. His job was to make the Joker laugh. Although he also helped the Joker fight Batman.

I thought this guy was Moe Howard. Look at the hair.

He also looks kind of like Moe otherwise, and tends to act pugnacious in spite of his small size. While he doesn't poke anyone in the eyes as Moe did, he does hold his hands over Batman's eyes with the idea that the Joker can then punch Batman, something that was represented on the cover. The trouble is, Batman ducks, and then the Joker just punches Gaggy instead.


Batman beats the Joker, the same as he had without the involvement of the Joker's new Stooge.


And Gaggy the Joker Stooge didn't live happily ever after.

During the course of the story, Gaggy uses a recognizable Moe Howard line. He says "Why you--!" on page 9. In the original Three Stooges films Moe would frequently say that in reaction to the knuckleheaded stupidity of some of the other characters, frequently responding with violence as well.
