LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE Photo

LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE was a 1934 RKO production starring Ben Lyon and Thelma Todd. Here is a publicity photo of Thelma Todd from this movie with the original caption.

The caption refers to RKO as Thelma Todd's home lot. She had worked for them before, but that wouldn't really have been her home lot as she was on loanout from Hal Roach.

RKO Short Subjects Ad

Here is another ad for RKO short subjects. At left is Charlie Chaplin, between McCullough and Clark, Edgar Kennedy, Mickey Rooney*, and a number of cartoon characters. Van Buren was best known as a producer of cartoons, but also pro

Van Buren was best known as a producer of cartoons, but also produced the 12-chapter serial THE LAST FRONTIER, mentioned on the right. Van Buren also reissued the silent Charlie Chaplin films.

*Mickey Rooney played "Mickey McGuire" in a series of short subjects, which led to him adopting the name of "Mickey". His birth name was Joe Yule Jr..

Ad For HIPS, HIPS HOORAY

Here we have an ad for the movie HIPS, HIPS, HOORAY with Wheeler and Woolsey, Dorothy Lee, Thelma Todd, and Ruth Etting, who was also mentioned in the ad for RKO short subjects.

Ruth Etting is shown in the small picture at lower right, but neither Thelma Todd or Dorothy Lee appear in this ad, although they are listed among the cast.

Merian C. Cooper is again mentioned as executive producer.

Ad For RKO Short Subjects

Here we have an ad for RKO short subjects, which would seem to include short subjects made by Charlie Chaplin in the silent era as well as Van Beuren cartoons and the Pathe news.

Clark and McCullough are depicted at left next to Charlie Chaplin. Edgar Kennedy is at right, the girl near him is Florence Lake, who played his wife in the movies. The Blondes and The Redheads are presumably among the girls in the background. Ruth Etting would be in there somewhere as well, possibly she's the one waving her arms.

Note that Merian C. Cooper is named as Executive producer. He is probably most famous for making KING KONG, but as we have seen he was also involved in the making of FLYING DOWN TO RIO, which featured Carole Tevis and June Brewster in the musical numbers.

June Brewster In The Fan Magazines

June Brewster was in the "Blondes and Redheads" series with Carol Tevis. Although the posters for the series I've seen had Carol Tevis, I see more publicity pictures of June Brewster.

June Brewster on the left.

Mary Pickford, right, was from the silent era. But in the thirties she was still considered one of the glamour girls.

The Edgar Kennedy Show

An effort is underway to bring back the original Edgar Kennedy series from RKO in a new format.

The Edgar Kennedy Show is planned as a fresh concept for introducing contemporary audiences to the wonderful world of classic star-driven comedy short subjects produced during the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

The idea is to create a continuing series of half-hour shows programmed for non-commercial broadcast and streaming video that consist of selected short subjects presented in their entirety along with mini-bios to inform audiences  of the specific star or comedy team's place in film history.
Among primary candidates for this "edu-tainment" treatment are comedy legends like Charley Chase, Laurel & Hardy, Our Gang, Harry Langdon, Thelma Todd, Patsy Kelly, ZaSu Pitts, Leon Errol, Andy Clyde, Clark & McCullough, Joe McDoakes and many more.

*                       *                      *

Edgar Kennedy was a familiar face in classic comedy films. He was in Hal Roach's first attempt to launch a female Laurel and Hardy series, the Anita Garvin and Marion Byron films.

And of course he worked with Laurel and Hardy.

He also worked with Our Gang,

the Marx Brothers,

and Wheeler and Woolsey.

His own series was popular in it's day, but has become somewhat obscure with the passage of time, although a few of the films were run on the PBS series MATINEE AT THE BIJOU.

Florence Rice was a frequent costar.

The Edgar Kennedy series was not actually one of my favorites, but I still think there could be an audience for them today.
