Dorothy Appleby And Wrong-Way Corrigan

First, Douglas "Wrong-Way" Corrigan became famous by going the wrong way and making a transatlantic flight. Then they made a movie with his story. Then it seems he was smitten with one of his costars...

THE SPARTANBURG HERALD JOURNAL, January 6, 1939

All I gotta say is that if he ran the other way, he was going the wrong way again!

Columbia Short Subjects Ads

Columbia's Krazy Kat was promoted above Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse, which was also being distributed by Columbia at this time.

At this point Krazy Kat was made to resemble Felix the Cat, a character that went into a decline after the coming of sound.

SCREEN SNAPSHOTS was popular at the time.

The Three Stooges had the longest-running comedy film series in history.

Elsie Ames, shown with Buster Keaton at the bottom, costarred with Buster Keaton and Harry Langdon and is given equal billing with them in this ad.

Christine McIntyre Photos

Sometimes Christine McIntyre played about the same character as "Pearl Pureheart" in Mighty Mouse cartoons. Here we see her as the long-suffering heroine of a Three Stooges comedy.

But sometimes she played a villainess.

HOT SCOTS ( 1948 )

In this one, she turned out to be one of the bad guys.

BRIDELESS GROOM

In a story that has it that Shemp must marry in order to gain an inheritance, Christine is one of the potential brides.

Nancy Saunders is on the right.

Incidentally, these publicity pictures don't have anything to do with the story.

Christine McIntyre is still popular with fans today.

Christine McIntyre Ad In POPULAR PHOTOGRAPY

Here is an ad for a Christine McIntyre film from the Feb. 1949 issue of POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY.

Actually it was one of a number of films that were advertised for sale.

And here is the ad again, rendering this page more or less symmetrical. .

The Brewster Twins

The Brewster twins were termed "The most beautiful twins in America", and had careers in movies, usually working together.

Their career began in the Buster Keaton comedy DITTO, in which they play twin girls who Buster Keaton confuses with each other.

The Brewster sisters also had some association with the Three Stooges. Barbara Brewster appeared with Moe, Larry and Curly in SCREEN SNAPSHOTS series !9 #6, and also appeared in THE FLAME OF NEW ORLEANS, which costarred Shemp. The Brewster sisters also toured with the Three Stooges in 20th Century Fox promotions and entertained the troops on foreign soil in USO shows during World War II.

June Brewster

June Brewster was teamed with Carol Tevis in the "Blondes and Redheads" series at RKO, which was produced by George Stevens and has been likened to his "Boy Friends" series at Roach, but the focus was on the girls, and the characters were not teenagers. June Brewster appeared in minor roles in features as a pretty girl, and can frequently be seen in leg art publicity photos. She appeared in HIPS, HIPS, HOORAY with Wheeler and Woolsey and  in MEET THE BARON ( 1933 ) with The Three Stooges and Ted Healy, with whom they were working at that time.

She bred pedigree show dogs in addition to acting (source: "The Film Daily, Apr-Jun 1935").

MELODY CRUISE ( 1933 ) with Charles Ruggles and Phil Harris.

FLYING DEVILS 1933 RKO with Cliff "Ukelele Ike" Edwards.

The same studio also made FLYING DOWN TO RIO in this period, June Brewster was also in that. Here is a publicity photo of her from that movie.

Leg art with the Graflex.

June Brewster married Guy McAfee, who ran gambling first in Los Angeles and later in Los Vegas.

Reblogged from http://derangedlacrimes.com/?tag=guy-mcafee - which has June Brewster confused with McAfee's previous wife, who had been a Los Angeles madam*.

( Guy ) McAfee was a former L.A. vice squad captain, turned proprietor of an illicit gambling den, the Clover Club on Sunset Strip, which was equipped with gaming tables that could be flipped over and hidden during raids. This did not, ultimately, stop a successful raid by the police. McAfee, with wife June in tow, duly left for Las Vegas, where he acquired the Pair-O-Dice Nightclub and Casino on Highway 91. He purchased several other lucrative properties during the 1940's: the Frontier Club, the Mandalay Lounge, the Pioneer Club, the SS Rex (which became Benny Binion's Horseshoe), and, most famously the Golden Nugget in 1946. At the time of his death fourteen years later, McAfee was considered one of the most successful operators in the history of America's gambling capital.

*Another erroneous assumption: the American Film Institute Catalog of Feature Films 1931-1940 mistakenly identifies June Brewster as one of the Brewster Twins; this is incorrect. Barbara Brewster and Gloria Brewster were the Brewster Twins.

SPEAK EASILY Herald

I had a herald for SPEAK EASILY here before, but this is a bigger copy.

Although Buster Keaton's career was in a decline at the time this film was made, it was a financial success for the studio, and Thelma Todd got a lot of publicity out of it.

Thelma Todd made one movie with Buster Keaton, SPEAK EASILY.

A Hedda Hopper item at middle left on this page.

Elsie Janis had been "the sweetheart of the American Expeditionary Forces" of World War I. But I'm not sure why it was supposed to be a joke to try and look like her late mother.

Part of this page had been torn away, but it did not affect the picture much.

Dorothy Appleby In The Fan Magazines

FILM DAILY, Jan. 5, 1928.
An item about Dorothy Appleby being added to the cast of SQUARE CROOKS is on the right.

An item in MOTION PICTURE NEWS, Feb. 9, 1929 - bottom of this page - refers to a title I don't find on Dorothy Appleby's filmography.

Here's a little from MOTION PICTURE CLASSIC, April 1929. Actually I had page 66 before, "Hollywood's Maine Attraction", but there's also a mention of Dorothy Appleby on page 6 that I had missed.

There's an MGM ad with Buster Keaton on page 7.

Here's page 66 again.
